Lend an Ear aims to provide companionship to Bexley residents with the aim of reducing loneliness by providing friendly face to face meetings with deaf or hearing impaired residents. This role involves befriending in the services users own home or place of residence.

We specifically need befrienders who live in the local area and/ or willing to travel with the London Borough of Bexley. Own transport is useful but not necessary.

Our befriending service is not to replace home care services, nursing duties or caring tasks undertaken by paid workers or those carried out by family members.

What skills do I need?

Good listening and communication skills. To take holistic approach, be respectful and non judgemental. Be reliable and able to maintain confidentiality. Be able to attend full training at Bexley Deaf Centre. A dedicated member of staff will provide ongoing support.

  • DBS check required
    The cost of the DBS will be covered by Bexley Deaf Centre.
  • Driving Licence and Vehicle required
    Not essential but useful if volunteer has access to a vehicle. The volunteer will be responsible to have the relevant car insurance in place.

    Mileage to and from service users place of residence that they are befriending or reimbursement of public transport expenses plus any journeys made to Bexley Deaf Centre for induction or training purposes.

  • Volunteers covered by insurance
    Once registered as a volunteer with Bexley Deaf Centre, the volunteer is covered by insurance only for the role in which they have been trained and not for family or friends of volunteers. Volunteers using or travelling in a motor vehicle need to have necessary car insurance in place.

Availability Details

This voluntary role is Monday to Friday. If you specifically wanted to volunteer at weekends or evenings, we would do our best to accommodate. The role is flexible.
