For Bexley Mencap
Our new telephone befriending project matches volunteers with people with a learning disability who are isolated, especially due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to have a weekly chat together. As a volunteer, you’d call people to develop a friendship with the aim of reducing social isolation and improving the health and wellbeing of members. For many of our members these chats are a highlight of their week and can make a huge difference to their lives.
We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one phone call per week of 30-60minutes
Please note that you may be asked to join a virtual group before you are assigned a befriendee. This will help to build up relationships with members and volunteers, as well as introduce you to the work and group activities of Bexley Mencap.
• Are enthusiastic about helping others to be less isolated • Have a good sense of humour and conversation skills • Are empathic, reliable and patient • Will maintain confidentiality • Are accepting of and respectful to all members, demonstrating empathy to all • Can work independently but still stay within the role’s boundaries • Ideally have experience of supporting or working with people with a learning disability, although not essential as training will be given • Are over 18
This opportunity can be carried out whilst working from home.
