This is an important role which involves leading the cleaning team (which we are looking to expand); Organising & supervising team tasks to high standards and keeping things "on track"  (we have Good To Go accreditation); Ordering cleaning materials; and helping to keep cleaning costs within the charity's budget.

The Crossness Pumping Station forms part of the system designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette as part of Victorian London’s urgently needed main sewerage system which was officially opened in 1865.  This outstanding example of Victorian engineering had a direct impact on the health of Londoners.

The Trust was set up to rescue, restore and preserve this unique part of Britain’s industrial heritage.  It has now embarked on developing its management systems to ensure long-term viability.  We are committed to sharing its fascinating story and, in the longer term, working towards achieving World Heritage Site status. To help clean all public and volunteer areas of this industrial museum to help showcase the exhibits to a high standard and keep the museum safe.

Our site is currently closed but we are keen to recruit now so that we are ready for re-opening.   Our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Greg Warner. Is waiting to hear from you.

Initial visit by arrangement only (advance notice to Thames Water required).  Website (www.crossness.org.uk) has 2-stage down-loadable map and directions, and general information about Crossness.

This opportunity offers you the chance to give back to the community and to volunteer in an iconic building.  There are opportunities for learning and sharing, having a laugh, companionship, personal satisfaction etc.

What skills do I need?

No formal qualifications required, but good people skills are essential for the role to run smoothly. An understanding of good standards of cleaning is also important to provide the experience necessary for you and the volunteer team to keep the areas in an appropriately clean condition.  If you have previous experience in a professional cleaning environment, that would be very welcome. The Trust has Good to Go status.
