About us: Woodlands Farm, located within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, is the largest city farm in the UK. Run as a traditional working farm with conservation and education as its core values, it is an oasis of countryside in London. We manage the land by grazing cattle and sheep in our wildflower and grass meadows where we don’t use any fertilizers or herbicides on the farm. With the variety of habitats and animals along with regular events and education activities running all year round, Woodlands Farm offers lots of opportunities to learn and explore for visitors of all ages. As a charity we are run predominantly by dedicated volunteers. Based on their skills and interests various projects are supported from land management, animal care and handling, to education and conservation.

What we are looking for: The Conservation and Wildlife Volunteer Role offers the opportunity to be involved in a variety of tasks related to conservation around the farm. We are looking for volunteers who are keen to be involved in general conservation management of the farm which could include hedgelaying or clearing thistles in our hay meadows. We are also looking for volunteers who have an interest in wildlife and would like to be involved in our wildlife surveys at the farm. No experience is necessary but if you are interested in the topic and willing to learn please get in touch and we will be happy to teach you.

What you will be doing as a Conservation and Wildlife Volunteer: The Conservation and Wildlife Volunteer role varies with the seasons and tasks required. You will have the opportunity to work as part of a team alongside other volunteers as well as independently.

Based on your experience, availability and interest you will be able to do: • Practical conservation management – this involves cutting back vegetation, pond clearance, hedgelaying, coppicing and tree planting. • Taking part in a variety of wildlife surveys throughout the year as part of our citizen science programme. • Learn species identification, basic ecology and land management skills. • Learn use and maintenance of tools.
