Independent Visitors are volunteers who befriend, support and advise a child or young person in care. Visitors meet regularly with a specific child/young person, and offer activity based visits, centred on the child’s interests and hobbies. Using a child centred approach, they establish a trusting relationship and promote the welfare and development of the child/young person. Whilst supportive of the professional network, visitors are required to maintain independence from those providing social care services.

What skills do I need?

To be reliable, committed, punctual and consistent. To be warm, friendly and sensitive in your approach to others. To have the ability to communicate with children and young people effectively. To be patient, tolerant, and realistic. To accept children and young people whose values and behaviour may be different from your own and to hold a non-judgemental attitude. To be able to share your feelings and anxieties about the work with the project coordinator and in the support groups. To be committed to promoting children’s rights and welfare and have some experience of looking after children/young people.

To provide monthly visits to a child/young person ideally with the intention of staying on the programme for a period of between 1-2 years. To be reliable and consistent, arranging visits in advance with child’s carer, and in some instances directly with an older child or young adult. We do understand life changes and fully support our volunteers in these aspect. Can be discussed on application. A monthly allowance of £30 is provided to meet the expenses of month to month activity and some exceptional expenses may be met with prior agreement.
