Crossness Pumping station would welcome your help with cleaning this iconic industrial museum. Keeping all public and volunteer areas of the museum clean, and helping to  showcase the exhibits to a high standard. The opportunity offers you the chance to give back to the community, and to volunteer in an iconic building, which is an outstanding piece of our industrial heritage.  There are opportunities for learning and sharing, having a laugh, companionship, personal satisfaction etc.

The Crossness Pumping Station forms part of the system designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette as part of Victorian London’s urgently needed main sewerage system which was officially opened in 1865.  This outstanding example of Victorian engineering had a direct impact on the health of Londoners.

The Trust was set up to rescue, restore and preserve this unique part of Britain’s industrial heritage.  It has now embarked on developing the museum to ensure long-term viability.  We are committed to sharing its fascinating story and, in the longer term, working towards achieving World Heritage Site status.

Our Volunteer Manager, Tom Registe, is waiting to hear from you.

Initial visit by arrangement only (advance notice to Thames Water required).  Website (www.crossness.org.uk) has a 2-stage down-loadable map and directions, and general information about Crossness.

What skills do I need?

No formal qualifications required, but an understanding of good standards of cleaning would be helpful to provide the experience necessary for you to keep the areas in an appropriately clean condition.  If you have previous experience in a professional cleaning environment, that would be very welcome.
